Bus Driver Arrested Following Manchester Crash That Injured 20

A double-decker bus driver has been taken into custody after a collision with a bridge in Manchester resulted in injuries to 20 individuals. The incident occurred on Monday when the bus struck the Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct on Barton Lane in Eccles, causing the upper section of the bus to be ripped off and a passenger to be thrown from the top deck.

As of Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the driver, a man in his 50s, is under investigation for causing serious injury through careless driving and has been released on bail while inquiries continue.

According to Greater Manchester Police, three individuals—a 19-year-old woman and two men aged 20 and 40—sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalized in stable condition. Seventeen other passengers received treatment for their injuries at the scene.

Authorities believe the bus deviated from its intended route and that the driver ignored height restriction warnings, which included hanging chains and signage.

In response to the incident, North West Ambulance Service declared a major incident, deploying 10 emergency ambulances, advanced paramedics, the Hazard Area Response Team, and the North West Air Ambulance.

Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed that the bus was operating the 100 service at the time, which runs from Shudehill to Salford, Trafford Centre, and Warrington. However, the area where the crash occurred does not seem to be included on the Bee Network Route map for this service.
